Nearly every human society ever excavated left some record of the sky. Before writing, before agriculture, before the wheel, somebody was tracking where the lights went and when they came back. What follows is the shape of that habit — how far it has actually carried us, what it has cost to carry, and how much of it is still a blank.
Six chapters. Take your time.
It is not curiosity. Curiosity is optional — you can decline it and still live a complete life. This is closer to hunger. Something about the arrangement of a dark sky and a species that keeps records produced, independently, in culture after culture, a person whose entire job was to watch the lights and write down what they did.
Ochre on limestone. Some researchers read a cluster of dots above the aurochs as the Pleiades. The reading is contested. The looking is not.
Bronze and gold, buried in a hillside. The oldest known concrete depiction of the night sky, made by people with no writing and no metal astronomy.
Around thirty bronze gears, pulled from a shipwreck in 1901. It predicted eclipses. Nothing of comparable complexity appears again for fourteen centuries.
Galileo points a twenty-power tube at Jupiter and finds four things going around something that is not the Earth. The argument was never really about telescopes.
Eighty-three kilograms of polished metal, beeping on 20.005 MHz. Everything after it is a footnote to the fact that it worked on the first attempt.
A single human lifetime separates that last entry from this sentence. Everything else on this page happened inside that gap.
The trouble with the sky is that it presents as a ceiling. It is not a ceiling. It is a corridor with no far wall, and each step down it is longer than every step already taken put together. The readout keeps pace with you.
Low atmosphere
The legal edge of space. There is no line up there. The air simply runs out by degrees, and at some point somebody had to pick a number and write it down.
Crewed without a single gap since 2 November 2000. For a quarter of a century there has not been one day on which every human being was on the planet.
Far enough out that one lap takes exactly one day, so the satellite appears to hang motionless above a fixed patch of ground. Your weather comes from here.
Twelve people have stood on it, all of them between 1969 and 1972. Nobody has been back. The last set of bootprints has been sitting undisturbed for over fifty years.
At its closest, a question takes three minutes to arrive. At its furthest, twenty-two. There is no conversation possible at that range, only correspondence.
A planet that failed to become a star, with a storm in it wider than the Earth that has been running for at least as long as anyone has had a telescope good enough to see it.
Where the Sun's wind finally loses to the wind between the stars. Voyager 1 crossed it on 25 August 2012 and nobody on Earth realized for another year.
The furthest object humans have ever moved. Launched 5 September 1977, still transmitting on a plutonium battery, still receding at seventeen kilometers every second.
The nearest other star to our own. Voyager 1, if it happened to be aimed there, would arrive in roughly seventy-five thousand years. It is not aimed there.
Four million solar masses folded into a volume smaller than Mercury's orbit. Every star you have ever seen with your own eyes is going around it, including this one.
The furthest thing visible to an unaided human eye. The light landing on your retina left that galaxy before our species existed, and it is on a collision course with ours.
Not the edge of the universe — the edge of what has had time to reach us. Past it, expansion carries galaxies away faster than their light can close the gap. They are not far away. They are gone.
Nineteen people have died in flight. Three more died strapped into a capsule on the ground, during a test that had been classified as non-hazardous. What follows is the whole list. It is short because the work is rare, not because it is safe.

Not difficult. Not underfunded. Open — as in nobody currently alive knows, and the people best placed to know are the ones saying so loudest. Open one and see how thin the floor is.
Ordinary matter — every atom in every star, planet, rock and person — is about five per cent of the universe. The other ninety-five has been named twice over, dark matter and dark energy, and identified neither time. We have given the gap a vocabulary and called it progress.
The galaxy is roughly thirteen billion years old and holds a few hundred billion stars. We have been listening deliberately since 1960. In that time nothing has answered. Either nobody is there, or nobody is broadcasting, or we are not the kind of thing that gets spoken to.
On 15 August 1977 the Big Ear telescope recorded a narrowband burst near 1420 MHz, seventy-two seconds long, thirty times the background. Every natural explanation offered since has been contested. It has not been heard again in half a century of looking at the same patch of sky.
In 2017 something entered the solar system from interstellar space, sped up on its way out in a way comets do not normally speed up, and left before any instrument could get a proper look. Two more interstellar visitors have been found since. We were not ready for any of the three.
General relativity says the center is a point of infinite density. Quantum mechanics says no such point can exist. Both theories are among the best-tested claims in the history of science. They cannot both be right down there, and a century of very capable people have failed to reconcile them.
The universe is not arranged to kill you — that would require attention. It is simply arranged such that almost everywhere in it, at almost every moment of its history, you would already be dead. Here is the panel.
The Armstrong limit. Above it, water boils at the temperature of your own body — your saliva, the fluid on your eyes, the water in your tissue. You would have roughly fifteen seconds of useful consciousness to do something about it.
The temperature of empty space, in every direction, everywhere anyone has measured. It is the cooled-down leftover glow of the Big Bang, and it is as warm as nothing ever gets.
The dose a detector aboard Curiosity measured for a round trip to Mars, before counting a single day spent on the surface. Earth's magnetic field is the only reason you are not taking it right now.
The surface of Venus: the crush of nine hundred meters of seawater, at 464 °C, beneath clouds of sulfuric acid. The longest any machine has survived down there is 127 minutes.
The surface of a neutron star. A teaspoon of the material weighs about a billion tonnes, and a single kilogram falling one meter onto it arrives carrying the energy of half a kiloton of TNT.
Tracked fragments in Earth orbit larger than ten centimeters, above an estimated 1.2 million too small to track and still entirely lethal. At orbital speed, a fleck of paint arrives like a rifle round.
Apex Andromeda is a record of what has actually been sent, where it went, and what became of it. Not the concept art. Not the roadmaps. The vehicles that flew, the spacecraft still transmitting, and the ones that went quiet.
It exists because that record is scattered across agency press kits, PDFs that move, mailing lists that die, and databases that go offline without notice — and because a thing nobody wrote down slowly stops having happened.
It is free, it carries no advertising, it sells nothing, and it is not affiliated with any space agency. It runs on a server that costs money every month.
Every generation that looked up assumed it was looking at the final frontier, and every one of them was looking at the near edge of something they had not measured yet. We are almost certainly doing it right now. That is the good news.
A rubber O-ring, stiffened by an overnight freeze, failed to seal a joint it had sealed on every previous flight. Engineers had argued against launching that morning.

A suitcase-sized piece of insulating foam had struck the left wing at roughly eight hundred kilometers an hour, sixteen days earlier, during a launch everybody watched and nobody worried about.
Add the pad crews, the test pilots, and the Nedelin catastrophe of 1960, and the number stops being a list and starts being a statistic. Every one of them knew the odds before they signed.
Physics runs backwards cleanly to about 10⁻³⁵ of a second and then stops being able to say anything at all. It is possible that 'before the Big Bang' is a grammatically correct question with nothing on the other end of it, which is a considerably worse answer than not knowing.

How long until expansion has carried every other galaxy past the horizon. Astronomers working after that date will conclude, correctly on every scrap of evidence available to them, that the Milky Way is the whole universe.
The habitable fraction of the universe, measured by volume, rounds to zero. We are standing on every last bit of it anyone has ever found.
